Welcome to Luxury Backpack…

A blog about living a life less ordinary – seeking adventure in the everyday, finding luxury in the little things, and travelling with and without kids.

This blog is a labour of love, written by a thoroughly modern mama. When I started Luxury Backpack in 2016 I was in Florida, unable to travel or work as I was going through the visa process, and therefore also broke as can be. It was a pleasant distraction from my novel (which I had just started) and a way of sharing all of my travels. I had just left my job as an event manager in London to follow my heart to Florida, and my brain was still working overtime even though my body was lying on a hammock all day with little else to do.

Up until that point my life had been a bit of a wild adventure. My family hadn’t known where I was half of the time (and my friends still didn’t), and I had created a life and career based around my lust for travel. I had no inclination to settle down, nor have a baby and get married. Convention was something I was running from, and yet without realizing it, it landed right in my path. This led me to learn one of many of my life’s great lessons…

Lesson number one…

It just turned out that what I thought of as “convention” – marriage, babies, a steady job – wasn’t convention at all, but just a part of life. I now have all three of these things – marriage (one), babies (one), and a sort of steady job. What I don’t have is a normal life…. and I certainly don’t follow any kind of convention!

The whole time I was in London, as much as I loved being a “career girl” I was dreaming of making a fortune and skipping off into the sunset. I wanted to travel all the time. I had tasted the sweetness of luxury adventure in my career as a yacht stewardess, and was now trying to do the maths to forge a different career based on travel and what I had quit the aforementioned career of travel to do: write. But I soon found out that I was missing the bigger picture…

Lesson number two…

You can travel in luxury without having a hedge fund. True. I have been to so many glamorous and “luxury” destinations, and guess what: I didn’t spend much money doing so. Luxury doesn’t have to mean a huge price tag. And I’m not going to tell you some wishy-washy philosophical mantra about luxury meaning a different thing to every person (although it does). I just mean that you can travel in luxury in many ways…

You can create a career that allows you to travel in luxury whilst earning a good wage, or you can learn HOW to experience luxury travel on a modest budget. This includes picking the right destination, learning travel hacks, tips & tricks to help your budget go further, and knowing where to look for the kind of luxury travel that is understated, filled with adventure, and will satiate your wanderlust forever.

Who Is The Luxury Backpack Woman?

I think every woman should be able to find a positive corner of the internet where they get that kick up the backside to do something awesome. Whether it is with ten minutes whilst having a cup of coffee, with their day, or with their whole life! I wanted to create a blog where I can share all the weird and wacky things I’ve done, and how I have bagged so many great things in my life just by not giving in to convention and society. I write for you, my Luxury Backpack woman. Because I wholeheartedly believe the life of your dreams is within reach. Not in a corny Instagram caption way, but in an honest, let’s just DO THIS way. Whether you are starting out on your travels and have the world at your feet (jealous, me?) or have a family, a career, a mortgage, etc, and just want a giggle and a slice of escapism now and then: I’ve got you.

  • The Luxury Backpack woman is not afraid to throw a few essentials into a backpack and get out of the house.
  • She looks chic without trying too hard.
  • She travels to luxurious destinations without spending too much.
  • She is thrifty.
  • She embraces motherhood by showing her little ones the world, opening their minds, and showing them how to have an adventure wherever the destination.
  • But the most important thing about her is that SHE GETS IT DONE.

Sound like you or someone you aspire to be? Then this is the blog for you!

A little bit about me…

I’m a novelist, new mum, and the founder of luxurybackpack.com. I write about my travels, travel hacks for travelling in luxury on a budget (because, let’s face it, we all deserve some pampering now and then), and my experiences as a new mummy who packed up and moved to Mexico. I also hope to encourage other mamas to start their own blog, business, or adventure, along the way! You can read more about me here and scroll through my monthly update blogs, ‘Notes from the Backpack’, to get to know me and my little family better!
