Christmas time for new mothers is as exciting as ever but can also be a whirlwind of organising stress. If you are just about to have a baby, like me, you might be feeling anxiety just at the thought of entertaining all those people at Christmas whilst trying to get breastfeeding down or relying on zero sleep. I wrote this gift guide with all those new mothers (or mothers to be) in mind, so you can actually get them something they really would love this year.
All the gifts on this list are ones that I know any new mother that I know would love, and I have handpicked myself. They are all pretty – because it’s a christmas gift guide and you don’t want to give something ugly! And most importantly, apart from one or two, they are all budget friendly.
If you only take one piece of advice away from this post let it be this: do not buy a new mother something for the baby as HER present. This is just cruel. Buy the baby something, but remember to spoil mummy too. Believe me, she deserves it.
Happy gift giving, and happy first christmas to all those little babies out there that are making awesome women into awesome mothers!
Books and Reading
From baby advice books, to funny memoirs that will make them giggle during the 3am feeds, to a novel they can get stuck into, the Amazon Kindle is a great gift for new mums. The paperwhite is reasonably priced, sleek, and good for reading in any light – perfect for bedtime, bathtime, or anytime. £109.99
The Wonder Weeks by Hetty Van de Rijt
The bestselling book mothers around the world swear by for peace of mind and to understand their baby. The Wonder Weeks details the development your child goes through and explains why they might be acting up/not sleeping/feeding differently. Paperback £11.89 | Kindle £7.73
American Housewife by Helen Ellis
Short stories are perfect for a new mum as they might actually be able to finish one before baby requires attention again. These stories made me laugh so much. Welcome to the weird, wonderful and bitchy world of the American housewife! Paperback £8.99 | Kindle £5.99
The Break by Marian Keyes
The latest offering by my favourite feel good author. My sister (who recently had her first baby) asked me for a novel to get stuck in to (light and easy) and I turned straight away to Keyes. The Break is about a husband who has run away to find himself and is hilariously funny. Hardback £13.60 | Kindle £9.99 (Paperback not released until May 2018)
Keep Calm: The New Mum’s Manual by Dr Ellie Cannon
The antidote to usual parent handbooks, this guide encourages mums to use their own instincts rather than follow strict rules, to take breaks, and to worry less. A perfect gift for a happy new mother. Paperback £9.07 | Kindle £7.99
French Children Don’t Throw Food by Pamela Druckerman
For the free-spirited, travel-loving, stylish mamas who already covert the French through style and beauty. This is a travel guide-come-parenting guide, and teaches the French way of parenting. Splurge and get them the hardcover. It will look really cute on the shelf next to the likes of Alexa Chung’s It and How To Be Parisian by Anne Berest. Paperback £8.99 | Kindle £4.99 | Hardcover £44.56
A Subscription To An Online Magazine
A really thoughtful present that they can enjoy throughout the year is a subscription to a magazine or newspaper. Most paper-copy subscriptions come with a tablet version for free, so they can read on the go. My choices are Vogue, Conde Nast Traveller, The London Review of Books (I recently subscribed), or Psychologies for a thought-provoking mindful read.
Even better for busy mums, a subscription to Audible is a really thoughtful gift. It is just £7.99 per month, and they can choose whichever book they want each month to download and listen to on the go.
Thea & Me Teething Necklace
There is no point buying a new mum a beautiful necklace – she just will worry about wearing it with baby around. Unless of course it has baby in mind too. These stunning necklaces by Thea & Me are stylish and practical, as they are made for mama to wear and baby to fiddle with, chew and soothe sore gums. This also gives baby something else to grab other than mummy’s hair! From £12.50, Thea & Me.
When you are a new mum, days can get lost and a normal planner isn’t going to work as effectively – they will end up with a lot of blank pages and need a lot more space for other things. Enter the bullet journal. They can use this journal as a lifeline, making pages for days that are super busy, and missing out quieter days altogether. They can make lists galore – which will be really helpful for every element of life, from plotting their next venture to tracking dirty nappies. These are my favourites, and they come in so many beautiful colours! You can also choose whether you would like plain, squared, dotted, or lined pages (I prefer the squared or dotted.) £12.99, Leuchtturm.
Essential Oil Diffuser
Oil diffusers are the safest and best way of maintaining a gorgeous aroma in your home, eliminating cold and flu germs, and cleansing the air. I got really into essential oils earlier this year after attending an event and was astounded by how many benefits they have for your health and wellbeing. Diffusers are great for using with oils that are mood enhancers, cleansers, that just smell delicious, and are safe for using around babies – unlike many synthetic room fragrances. It is important to find one that is powerful enough to fill any room with fragrance, and this one does that along with having varying coloured lights, perfect for creating a relaxing environment. £26.99, Anjou.
Boden Cosy Woven Pyjamas
These days she is probably spending a lot of time in pyjamas, and if she isn’t then she should be! A gorgeous, good-quality, snuggly pair of PJs is a sure-win with a new mother. Make them tick the useful and luxury boxes by buying her a pair from Boden. These are button down – essential for night feeds, warm and cosy, and come in lovely festive prints. £60, Boden.
Pai Skincare Organic Rosehip Oil
Lack of sleep and stress might be making her skin feel a little lacklustre these days, especially with the winter weather. Facial oils are little miracle workers, and I always swear by Rosehip oil for sorting my skin out and giving it a glow. This organic one by Pai is really reasonably priced. As it’s Christmas you might want to get her a lovely set though, so the Landmark collection is perfect. It includes the oil plus some other goodies. Rosehip oil £22, Pai, and Landmark Collection set £40, lookfantastic.com (with free delivery and next day delivery available too!)
Gel Nail Kit
Getting to the salon might not be as easy these days, and does anyone really have time to paint their nails and wait for it to dry at home? An at home gel-nail kit is perfect for a little pampering, and actually pretty affordable. I have heard really good things about the SensationNail kits, available at Boots. This starter kit has everything she will need. £49.99, Boots.
Clarins Eau Dynamisante
New mamas might be cautious about using harsh fragrances around newborns. This perfume is one of my longtime favourites – it smells divine – and combines aromatherapy and skincare with fragrance. Nourishing for your skin, gentle, and beautifully scented, it is perfect for everyday and especially around babies. Clarins offers a beautiful gift set that includes the body lotion, which just happens to be my favourite body lotion of all time – it’s divine! £28.90, John Lewis.
Wine Tasting Subscription by Sip & Learn
After a 9 month pregnancy, encourage her to enjoy some of her favourite things again. A wine subscription service is a fun way for her to indulge in something just for her. Sip & Learn offer a great service where she will receive two bottles of wine from small independent producers and an accompanying magazine to start learning about wine every month. £35 per month, notonthehighstreet.com.
Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay
The cult favourite facial-in-a-jar is popular for a reason. This clay mask is 100% natural, with no additives, fragrances or animal products, and is perfect for a bath-time mask to beautify and refresh the skin. If it’s good enough for Cleopatra! £13.99, Amazon.
Stocking Fillers (Under £10)
Luxury Candle from… Aldi!
Aldi rivals Jo Malone with their luxury candle that bloggers and home stylists have gone crazy for. I recently bought the pomegranate one and absolutely love it. A tenth of the cost of a Jo Malone version, larger in size, and just as chic. Perfect for a bath time pamper for a tired new mama! Keep your eye out for them when you are in the supermarket, as they are selling out country-wide. £3.99, Aldi.
Jessie Ware Glasshouse
Everyone’s favourite Londoner Jessie Ware has just released her third album, three years after Tough Love. Her new album is formed around themes of family, love, tumultuous relationships and motherhood – pretty perfect for a new mama. Buy her the CD so she has something to unwrap, and offer to upload it to her itunes so she can listen wherever she is. £9.99, Amazon.
Artisan Coffee Selection Pack
For the former coffee lover turned new mum, coffee might be getting her through her days right now. I gave up caffeine (mostly) during my pregnancy, and can’t wait to guiltlessly enjoy a cup of coffee once baby arrives. I love trying different types of coffee, and this selection pack is a really nice gift for a fellow coffee lover or sleep deprived mama. £9.99, notonthehighstreet.com.
A little box full of treats every month, Birchbox is the perfect gift for beauty fans and new mothers who will appreciate the little gift in the mail. As well as containing lovely and useful beauty miniatures, the actual boxes are really great for keepsakes. £10 per month, Birchbox.
Clarins Festive Treats Eyes And Lip Skincare Gift Set
This is such a great little stocking filler for only £10! The lip comfort oil is divine, perfect for dry winter skin, and the instant smooth perfecting touch is great for dry skin in general. Hang it on the tree for a little Christmas morning surprise. Anyone who needs a little pampering in their lives will LOVE this. £10, John Lewis.
Luxury Gifts (We’re Looking At You, Dads!)
Tom Ford Eye Colour Quad in Honeymoon
If she loves her make-up and you want to spoil her, buy her this. Anything by Tom Ford is going to be a winner, but this eyeshadow quad has such beautiful warming shades that will suit any eye colour. It will add some serious glamour to her make-up bag, and make her feel extra special when she might need it the most. £66, Tom Ford.
Ugg Suede Slippers
The most luxurious slippers, these will last for years, and be a real snuggly treat for new mums at Christmas and for all year long. The Ugg Ansley women’s suede slippers are a full slipper and come in a few different colours, and the Scufette slippers are slip-ons which are perfect for the bedroom. Either style will add a bit of luxe to her well-loved pyjamas and dressing gown combo! Ugg Ansley slippers, £90, and Ugg Scuffette slip-ons, from £63.
Personalised Mixed Birthstone Necklace
I know, I know…. I literally just said there was no point buying a new mother a pretty necklace because the baby would grab it. But then I saw these and fell head over heels. A perfect keepsake, you can choose up to 4 birthstones to combine, which is such a lovely idea for symbolising the baby’s birth. From £65, notonthehighstreet.com.
Gucci Leather Belt With Double G Buckle
Buy her a little piece of Gucci and you might just make her Christmas. She probably won’t be wearing heels anytime soon, and is now a firm member of the diaper-bag club, so perhaps a handbag isn’t so thoughtful. She can wear this very Instagram-worthy belt with every outfit, and it will make her feel extra glamorous despite the baby sick and maternity kickers/nursing bra underneath. £270, Gucci.
