Happy Hours are the holy grail of drinking and eating cheaply whilst on your travels.
Whether the destination is all round expensive, or if you want to try a more expensive restaurant or bar and have a glamorous evening, the happy hour is the way forward.
The Florida Keys LOVE their happy hours. I say ‘hours’ because most places offer amazing deals from 4-6pm, if not all day.
Marathon, in the middle keys, is my pick of the best place to stay if you are looking for a luxe-on-a-budget destination in the keys, offering everything from sandy beaches to top notch resorts, and at a fraction of the price of Key West. Not to mention, they have some pretty fabulous eateries, too.
I painstakingly (yeah, right) tried all of the Happy Hour in Marathon, in order to bring you the very best deals, drinks and bites in the area.
Here are my top 10!
10 – Porky’s
Best for the friendly atmosphere
Porky’s is a one of a kind bar where you can watch fishing boats come and go whilst eating some great food. There are always some unique characters propping up the bar! With a generous HH menu including BBQ pork sliders for $5.99, plus beers for $1.50, you can’t go wrong!
9 – Sparky’s Landing
Best for peel n’ eat shrimp
Sparky’s makes the list purely for their location – and their shrimp! It is a really cute no-frills wooden dock-side bar, with a stunning view on Key Colony. Their happy hour is 4pm-6pm, where they offer 30 cent peel n’ eat shrimp and drink specials
8 – Sunset Grille
Best for a pool with a view – and travellers with kids!
Sunset Grille is one of the few places with a pool at the bar where you can take a dip to cool off, and then head straight back to the bar. They have various tiki games too – perfect for travellers with kids! Between 3pm-6pm drinks are 2-4-1 and appetizers are half price.
7 – Upstairs Bar @ Key’s Fisheries
Best for the sunset view & stone crab claws
$2 stone crab claws, $0.75 oysters, $3.50 well drinks… it doesn’t get much more Keys’y than this place! Plus they do a sunset toast every night with a free shot. Don’t leave Marathon without visiting this locals hangout, located upstairs at the Key’s Fisheries. Come for the stone crab, stay for the spectacular sunset view.
6 – Marathon Grill and Ale House
Best for late night happy hour
The best thing about the ‘Ale House’ is that they offer not one, but two (!) happy hours a day. From 10pm-midnight they start up drink specials again, including a late night menu. Food items are $5, wine is $3 and beer is $2. This is the best place for sports fans, too.
5 – Lazy Days
Best for a quiet getaway
This is one of my personal favourite happy hours – they have a great selection of food, their wine and drinks deals are really good, and it is such an off-the-beaten-track place you might just while away a few hours here. You will find deals on all of their drinks between 3pm-5pm.
4 – Castaway
Best for the beer lover
Castaway have happy hour deals from the minute they open at 11am, including the legendary ‘Bloody Wilson’ – a Keys’y take on the classic bloody Mary. Between 3pm-5pm, however, their extensive 52 draft beer list if half price, and they do sushi plates for $10. Perfect for sampling some local beers!
3 – Lighthouse Grill, Faro Blanco
Best for the special occasion
This is one of the few fine dining places in Marathon where you can bring out the heels (or should I say one of the few places where shoes in general are actually necessary!) A stunning location, from the glamorous yachts to the beautiful pool, it is a lovely place to hang out. Their HH menu includes small plates or full entrees ($14 burgers, $8 conch fritters). Everything has a special touch, and I recommend it for a special occasion.
2 – Steak and Lobster House
Best for HH sushi and seafood
For raw fish and sushi HH deals, this place is the best. Their indoor air-conditioned bar has a great selection of small plates for $5.99 all day until 6pm, along with various drink deals. It is a smart place where you can dress up a little, perfect for a date or romantic getaway.
1 – Tarpon Creek
Best all round happy hour (until 7pm!)
This is my all round favourite happy hour. The best thing is that deals are until 7pm, meaning those who live and work in the area can make the most of them too. They have great nibbles (I love their Cuban rice balls) and you can get a G+T for $4. It is the largest tiki bar in Marathon, and a stunning location! They also have live music so you really get the full experience. Service is great too!
