Marathon Florida is known as the heart of the Keys. Consisting of 7 islands in the middle of the Florida Keys, Marathon has so much to offer. From some of the best diving in Florida, to a host of touristy attractions and pretty resorts, it packs a punch when it comes to perfect holiday destinations. Here’s why it is one of the best holiday destinations you can choose:
The beach is beautiful
Contrary to popular belief, there are not actually that many beaches in the Keys. And of all of them, there aren’t that many that are great for swimming. Sombrero beach in Marathon is one of the best in the whole of the Keys. Swimming is always good, and unless it’s a holiday it is normally not too crowded. Plus there are a couple of volleyball nets and a kiddie park, perfect for keeping the whole family entertained.
There are plenty of things to do on rainy days
Marathon has a whole range of great activities for all the family. The top attractions include:
- Dolphin Research Centre
- Turtle Hospital
- Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters
You can get close to nature
Crane Point is a really beautiful place. From history of the Keys and the habitat, to a butterfly garden, and kayaking, there is lots to see and do. It is very pretty to wander around, and is a nice quiet green space amongst the bustle of everyday life.
Nearby state parks include Curry Hammock which has a nature trail, and my favourite park Bahia Honda, which has several beautiful wild beaches and spectacular views of the nearby historic bridge.
There is a great selection of hotel and resort options for every budget
From beautiful resorts, such as Hawks Cay and Tranquility Bay, to more affordable ocean-side lodgings, such as Rainbow resort, there is something for every budget. The Keys is known to be more on the pricey side when it comes to accommodation, so if budget is something you are thinking about, I recommend trying AirBnB for your Marathon getaway – there are some gorgeous options!

The diving and snorkelling is incredible
For diving enthusiasts, Marathon and the Upper Keys have the best diving in the whole of the Keys. There is an abundance of dive shops in Marathon to get you out to amazing sites such as Coffin’s Patch, Porkfish, and Sombrero Reef. If diving is something you haven’t done but are keen to try, your Marathon holiday is the PERFECT time to try it! I recommend trying SNUBA first, which is Scuba divings little cousin. Read all about my experience of SNUBA here.

Happy Hours are a right of passage!
“It’s 5 o’clock somewhere” is a saying you will hear a lot in the Keys! But after a day fishing, diving, or hanging out at the beach there is nothing more relaxing than an afternoon tipple. There are SO many places you can hit up for a cocktail and some oysters or afternoon munchies for happy hour. This is my list of the best 10 in Marathon – one for every day of the week, plus a few for good measure!
You can take a day trip to Key West
Key West is about 1 hour South of Marathon, and is a must visit on your trip to the Keys. Many prefer to stay in Marathon and visit Key West rather than the other way round as Key West can be very crowded, and doesn’t have an ‘off switch’ compared to quieter Marathon. It is also more expensive all round, but is a place you don’t want to miss! Read all about how to spend 24 hours in Key West here.
