“If you want to explore a new city full of beauty and culture that mixes old and new traditions, then Kraków is the place for you.”
-Faisal, Tell Me Travels
Kraków is one of Europe’s most popular luxury backpacking spots. Cheaper than most backpacking destinations, yet with every ounce of culture, nightlife, shopping, and dining. Solo travellers looking for an experience where you can meet new people and explore a new destination in comfort and style on a budget… pack your woolies and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime in Poland!
Tell Me Travels is a new travel company dedicated to luxury backpacking experiences. Opening up Mauritius to a new lower-budget traveller, they have now made Kraków their winter European destination, and I caught up with one of the co-hosts Faisal to hear all about it!
You can read the last interview all about their luxury backpacking adventures in Mauritius here.
It’s been 6 months since we last heard from you, how is Tell Me Travels?
“Tell Me Travels is doing very well! We took a lovely international group out to Mauritius over the summer and had an absolutely amazing time! The group swam with dolphins, partied on beaches and even had a spontaneous Zumba session on a small island.
Tell Me Travels have now started tours in Kraków, Poland. I know, it’s very different but the city is amazing and so lively.”
What can we look forward to with your Mauritius adventures this year?
“Mauritius is our flagship tour, our baby. So we have been continuously working to make it more adventure fuelled and inspiring than ever before. We have a new little surprise for everyone who comes along in the form of a secret trip. This could be anything from going on a hike, to a hidden waterfall, to exploring the corals in a glass bottom kayak……who knows!
This means that the experience will always be different and there’s still a little mystery left before you come along.”
So you’ve started running tours in Kraków. What are your top three things to do in the city?
“That’s a pretty hard one, there really is a lot to do, but if I have to choose:
- The main market square – It’s the biggest in Europe! So as many times as I’ve done it, it’s always just as impressive!
- The nightlife – This city is absolutely packed with pubs and clubs! To add to this, you have to include the 180,000 students that call Kraków home! A mix that ensures every night is a good night.
- The food – Most of the places in the city give you massive portions of tasty food for pretty cheap. I love eating Pierogi. It’s sort of Polish dumplings with lots of different fillings; it’s perfect for any time of the day, especially at night after a few drinks! On our trips we include a 6-course traditional Polish dinner experience where you get to some incredible food like Pierogi and wild boar!”
Why should I come with Tell Me Travels rather than organise a trip by myself?
“I’d say our Kraków trips are always full of fun, culture, parties and friends. As with all of our trips, we have dedicated tour leaders to show you around the city, take you to the best parties and make sure you have the best experience possible. We also include what we think are the best things to do in the city in order to make sure there is something for every type of traveller.
As well as group cultural activities, solo travellers won’t feel lonely with activities including a pub crawl with a ‘power hour’ of unlimited drinks!
Whatever you’re looking for, we’ve got you covered!”
I’ve heard Kraków has the highest density of bars and clubs in the World, is it true?
“It certainly looks that way! There are literally thousands to choose from, with most of them full almost every night. I think it has something to do with the massive student population that’s inhabited the city for hundreds of years; we all know they love a few beers after a hard day studying!”
Other than the nightlife, why should I come?
“If you want to explore a new city full of beauty and culture that mixes old and new traditions, then Kraków is the place for you. There is everything, from visiting a 700-year-old castle, learning about the history with a trip to the Auschwitz concentration camps, to shooting an AK-47 on a professional range! You can be sure that whatever your interests, Kraków has something for you.”
How’s the weather in Kraków, I’ve heard mixed things?
“Super varied. In summer it’s t-shirt and shorts weather, and in the winter it can dip down to well below 0°C. Personally I find winter in Kraków really pretty, the old buildings and castle covered in snow really give it a lovely atmosphere.”
Besides a passport, do I need anything else to come to Kraków?
“In most cases you won’t need anything else, but you can check on our website for more details.”
Now for some personal questions….
Mauritius or Kraków, which is your favourite?
“Well that’s not fair! I could be diplomatic and say they’re both unique and have their own charm. In all honestly, Mauritius is our ‘baby’ and I love that place with all my heart – it’s a true paradise. However Kraków, with its old buildings and feel, mixed in with all the young people makes the atmosphere electric. It’s such a hard one to answer, can I say both!?”
What inspires you?
“Ready for some cheese? What inspires me is to live a life true to myself. I don’t want to look back and have any regrets, which makes me take all of the opportunities I can and go at them with full commitment. It inspires me to meet as many people and see as many incredible places as possible with the hope of looking back and saying I truly lived.”
What’s the best part about your job?
“There are so many things to choose from, it really is a dream job! For me, the best bit is getting to meet so many people from all over the world. I get to show people around a new city and see their eyes light up, I get to teach them all about the culture and places and I learn a lot too! Getting to know people from all over means I learn about different cultures and the way they perceive things. It’s so fascinating and something I’m really grateful for.”
Funniest thing that’s happened on a tour?
“I’m not sure if everyone is going to appreciate this one, but everyone was okay in the end, which is the main thing.
So, we were running a tour in Kraków and a few of the group agreed to go to a haunted house/escape room on the last day. Honestly, it’s a terrifying experience but a lot of fun. So I left them to go in and ‘escape’, however when I came to get them, one of the guys had a bit of a cut and bruise above his eye. Quite panicked, I asked him if he was okay and what happened. He looked at me and said ‘a pig with a chainsaw ran at me, so I ran into a wall’. The entire group started laughing uncontrollably in the middle of the main square! To add to his pain, the poor guy had a job interview the next day!”
What are you looking forward to in 2017?
“2017 proves to be a big year for Tell Me Travels; we are looking forward to head out to Mauritius once again and show people this incredible country! We also have a very exciting new project that will encompass Kraków and maybe a few other European cities, so watch out for that one!”
