Like a scene from the Walking Dead, the Zombie Bike ride is incredible to witness! With the stunning turquoise ocean and the pretty buildings of Key West as a backdrop, the Zombie’s come out of their hiding places and things get weird!
Kick-starting Key West’s week-long Fantasy Fest, the Zombie Bike Ride is the wackiest, weirdest and most surreal experience you will ever have!
It started with just a few hundred people in 2009, and this year drew 10,000 zombies and their bikes to the streets of Key West. Gatherers meet at the starting point at Key West international airport where the ride begins, and cycle the streets down Duval and all the way towards Mallory Square. Along the way crowds gather to party, wave the Zombie’s on and hand out jello-shots to blood-thirsty riders!
This ride is just the beginning!
The party continues all down Duval street and in it’s many bars. We partied at the Zombie street party, watched live bands in Captain Tony’s Saloon and Irish Kevin’s, and drank frozen daiquiris in Fat Tuesday’s with fellow zombies and wide-eyed tourists who wondered what world they had walked into.
Our Zombie Experience…
Checking into Key West
We stayed at Southwinds Motel which is right at the end of Duval Street. This made it the perfect location for both getting to the starting point of the ride and getting home at the end of the night. The motel was clean and modern, with large comfy beds, kitchen, and bathroom with a large enough mirror to get Zombified in front of!
We rented our biked from ‘We Cycle’, the hosts for the event. They were really reasonably priced, and we took them straight to the airport so they were ready for us when the ride began. As the roads close just before the race start time at 6pm we were able to take a taxi back to the starting point later beforehand.
2pm – The Zombie Party Begins
The Zombie party begins at the meeting spot, with drink and food stands, face painting, and a gathering of the most hardcore ZOMBIES!
6pm – “Go!”
The ride commences! Zombies get their pedal on and begin the cycle along Key West’s coast, weaving through the streets towards the centre of town.
The party begins! We chained up our bikes and stood to watch the rest of the bikers arrive at the finish line. A crowd started forming in the street, and the party began. Drinks were served, street parties kicked off, and the Key West residents came out of their hiding places!
Creativity was key when it came to dressing dead! We decided to put a twist on this year’s Fantasy Fest theme of ‘Political Voodoo and Ballot Box Barbarians’ by dressing as news reporters. Of course I was the BBC!
My Favourite Costumes
Key West is known for its wacky residents, and they went all out in their attire! From on theme Trumps and Clintons, to neon Darth Vaders and S&M Princess Leia’s…. it was amazing seeing the creativity and effort that was made.
In a town like no other this was an event like no other! I highly recommend making the journey down South next year for this spectacular event!
What kind of Zombie would you be?
